Remembrance service for Sheriff Alastair Carmichael
A remembrance service for the late Sheriff Alastair Carmichael is being held at 11am this Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Dunkeld Cathedral, with tea and coffee afterwards at Dunkeld House Hotel, Dunkeld.
Sheriff Carmichael, who sat at Dundee Sheriff Court, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2024. He became the first judge in the world to continue conducting criminal jury trials with the aid of speech synthesis technology.
Lauded for his dedication in the face of adversity, the Lord President, Lord Pentland and Sheriff Principal Gillian Wade recently paid tribute to Sheriff Carmichael.
