Professor Alan Boyle

Edinburgh Law School has announced the passing of professor emeritus Alan Boyle.

He was professor of public international law at Edinburgh Law School from 1995 until 2017, where he taught international law, international environmental law, and law of the sea.

He also served as head of the public international law subject area, director of postgraduate studies, convener of the LLM/MSc exams board, and convener of the University Student Disciplinary Committee.

Professor Boyle was educated at the University of Oxford and previously taught at the University of London (Queen Mary College), University of Texas Law School, William and Mary College Law School, University of Paris (Paris II & X) and LUISS. He was general editor of the International and Comparative Law Quarterly from 1998 until 2006.

Professor Boyle also managed to balance his academic career with a successful legal practice at the international bar, where he has represented a diverse array of nations before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, mainly in environmental and law of the sea cases.
