Scotland’s former police chief, Philip Gormley, who resigned amid bullying allegations, has been appointed an inspector of constabulary – a role in which he will oversee the performance of a number of forces in England.

He resigned as chief constable in February while he was under investigation following allegations of gross misconduct which he denied.

It is understood he will begin his role next week and that he was chosen from a strong list of candidates following a rigorous selection process, the BBC reports.

In his new role at Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), he will work for Sir Tom Winsor and will inspect 12 forces in the north of England, among them Greater Manchester, Merseyside and West Yorkshire.

In a career spanning 33 years, Mr Gormley has been chief constable in Norfolk, chief constable and deputy director at the National Crime Agency and Metropolitan Police commander, tasked with oversight of the Special Demonstration Squad.
