Balfour and Manson and many in the Edinburgh legal community are mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of Paula Moffat, a much‑loved and long‑standing member of the firm, who died last weekend at the age of 62.

Ms Moffat began her career with Balfour and Manson at just 17, working as a court runner – a position she carried out with dedication for many years. As court running became less central to the firm’s operations, she continued to support that role while naturally expanding into wider administrative responsibilities. She remained with the firm for an extraordinary 45 years, and had no intention of retiring any time soon. During that time she became a familiar and cherished figure across the Edinburgh courts – known to generations of solicitors, clerks, messengers‑at‑arms, advocates and the judiciary.

A woman with a quick wit, a generous spirit, and a heart of gold, she had an unmatched ability to lift a room, to offer a kind word at exactly the right moment, and to bring humour into even the most difficult days. One colleague affectionately described her as “the original gallus besom” – a title she wore with pride.

Her sudden loss has been felt deeply by everyone at Balfour and Manson and by the many members of the Edinburgh legal community who knew her well. She leaves behind countless friendships forged over decades and a legacy of loyalty, kindness, and unforgettable character.

The firm said: “Our thoughts are with Paula’s family and friends at this difficult and very painful time. She will be profoundly missed, and the Balfour and Manson office will not be the same without her.”

Paula Moffat, born 4 November 1963; died 14 March 2026.
