Optimum Advocates welcomes six new members

Optimum Advocates has welcomed six new members to the stable.

Shaun Alexander, Dominic Burke, Kevin Jarvis, Graham Macdonald, Sandy Orgill and Nicola Ross were called on Friday.

Mr Alexander calls to the bar as a Lord Hope Scholar, having spent five years as a procurator fiscal depute, including three years in the High Court Sexual Offences Unit. He specialises in criminal law, children’s referrals, family law and regulatory matters, with particular expertise in sexual offences involving vulnerable witnesses and expert evidence.

Mr Burke also calls to the bar as a Lord Hope Scholar. He qualified as a solicitor in May 2024 while working with WSA Bannerman Burke. He appeared in sheriff courts all over Scotland on a near daily basis and was involved in several High Court trials.

Mr Jarvis is another Lord Hope Scholar calling to the bar this year. He was a senior procurator fiscal depute at Airdrie. He has prosecuted complex and high-profile solemn-level cases including historic child abuse offences and sexual offences involving multiple complainers.

Mr Macdonald calls to the bar having latterly worked as a senior procurator fiscal depute within the specialist casework division of Crown Office. He has significant jury trial experience. Alongside mainstream crime, he prosecuted specialist jury trials of a complex nature involving allegations of fraud, VAT evasion and money laundering; health and safety; and serious organised crime.

Mr Orgill completed his traineeship and then practised at a leading criminal defence firm in Glasgow. He has represented clients in sheriff courts across Scotland and instructed counsel in the High Court the Justiciary. He has experience in cases involving misuse of drugs and crimes of violence and has particular experience in the preparation and conduct of trials involving sexual offences.

Ms Ross was latterly a senior procurator fiscal depute, dealing with a wide range of solemn and summary cases and appeals. She has experience of serious and complex cases and of working with vulnerable witnesses. She appeared in many fatal accident inquiries when she worked for the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit.

Practice manager Angela Bath said: “I am looking forward to working with Shaun, Dominic, Kevin, Graham, Sandy and Nicola as they begin their career at the bar. They are all a very welcome addition to our stable.”

Stable director Frances Connor said: “I am delighted to welcome our six new members. They are a valuable addition to our stable at this exceptionally busy time. I wish them all a very successful career at the bar. “
