One month to respond to Scottish government consultation on biometrics commissioner

Proposals to establish a biometrics commissioner to provide independent oversight of biometric data used by the police and others in Scotland and an associated statutory code of practice are out for consultation.

Scotland is the only nation in the UK missing an independent body to oversee biometric techniques.

The Scottish government has said that the biometrics field is evolving rapidly and offers great potential in the identification and prevention of crime and the delivery of community safety.

As a result of the ethical and human rights considerations associated with biometric data, the proposals have been put out for public consultation.

The consultation explores the potential to deliver independent and ethical oversight of the collection and use of such data in a policing and community safety context.

An analysis of consultation responses will be undertaken and published after the consultation closes on October 1.
