‘Nirvana baby’ sues for $2.5 million

The man who appeared nude as a baby on the cover of Nirvana’s best-selling Nevermind album is suing the band and others for $2.5 million, claiming the photo represents “commercial child pornography”.

Spencer Elden, now 30, has filed a lawsuit in California seeking $150,000 in damages from 15 parties, including the surviving members of the band and the widow of late frontman Kurt Cobain, as well as record labels.

Lawyers for Mr Elden claim the image, taken in 1991 by family friend Kirk Weddle at a party, is “sexually graphic”, with the iconic dollar bill casting him as a “sex worker”, The Times reports.

Attorney Robert Y. Lewis said: “Neither Spencer nor his legal guardians ever signed a release authorising the use of any images of Spencer or of his likeness and certainly not of commercial child pornography depicting him.”
