Judy Krieg

Shepherd and Wedderburn has announced the hire of compliance, governance and financial regulation lawyer, Judy Krieg. She joins Shepherd and Wedderburn’s commercial disputes and regulation group as a partner, working out of the firm’s London office.

Dual US and UK qualified, Ms Krieg brings with her considerable insight from various perspectives of the compliance and financial regulation sector, adding to the breadth of Shepherd and Wedderburn’s already considerable and award-winning regulatory and transactional expertise.

She has advised on compliance and financial regulation matters covering a wide range of industries and more than 70 countries. Her background includes time served as chief compliance officer (CCO) at Rolls-Royce plc and Willis Group Holdings, in-house counsel at NASDAQ-listed company, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. and external counsel at AMLAW25 law firms. She has also worked at the UK Financial Services Authority, where she acted as lead case investigator on wholesale enforcement issues, covering regulatory matters and criminal breaches including market abuse, insider dealing and money laundering.

With an in-depth understanding of the UK and US regulatory regimes, she is a thought leader and frequent speaker at leading international conferences on anti-bribery and corruption, money laundering, financial crime, and compliance systems and controls.

Helping global businesses comply with the practical implications of financial regulation has been the focus of Ms Krieg’s work over the last ten years. Her knowledge spans the UK Bribery Act, UK Proceeds of Crime Act and the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. She has acted in proceedings before the UK and US authorities and has front-line experience of how the Serious Fraud Office handles UK Bribery Act issues.

Welcoming Judy to the firm, Shepherd and Wedderburn chief executive, Stephen Gibb said: “Judy’s excellent reputation and skills offer the firm a great opportunity to grow our financial regulation offering and realise the synergies between our high-quality general competition law and merger control practice and our specialist expertise in utility, telecoms and financial regulation.

“Regulatory regimes that open up and protect markets will be of critical importance to global economic development over the next few decades. Judy’s varied experience enables her to provide pragmatic, common-sense advice and solutions to clients, helping them to navigate the risks and opportunities presented by the regimes’ constant state of flux. We are excited to have her on board.”

Ms Krieg added: “Joining Shepherd and Wedderburn’s exceptional regulation and markets group gives me the opportunity to work with some of the country’s leading competition and regulation lawyers, and to provide cross-sectoral advice to the firm’s strong UK and international client base.

“Drawing on my experience as CCO and regulator, I look forward to building on the group’s already thriving position and developing a corporate and financial compliance offering, giving CCOs and general counsel pragmatic advice on regulatory strategy and compliance globally.”

Her appointment is the latest in a series of high profile hires. Following two internal partner promotions in December 2015, Yvonne Brady, Fiona McKerrell and John Gallacher joined the firm’s restructuring and insolvency practice from HBJ Gateley in early January.
