Murder Trial to return with Brian Low and Kimberly Bruce cases
The BBC documentary series Murder Trial will return later this year with two new cases examining the murder of dog walker Brian Low in Aberfeldy and the death of Kimberly Bruce in Dundee.
The series, produced by Firecrest Films for BBC Scotland and BBC Factual, will also be accompanied by a new 10-part podcast, Inside The Murder Trial.
One two-part programme will focus on the murder of Mr Low, who was shot while walking his dog in Highland Perthshire in February 2024. The second examines the prosecution following the death of Ms Bruce, who fell from a motorway bridge in Dundee in July 2023, in what the BBC describes as the first Scottish prosecution of its kind involving charges of culpable homicide and domestic abuse.
The broadcaster said the series includes access to the Scottish courts, police investigators, prosecutors, defence teams and victims’ families.
Louise Thornton, head of commissioning at BBC Scotland, said: “Murder Trial continues to provide the audience with exceptional access to Scotland’s courts and justice system. These two new cases are a compelling watch of the level audiences have come to expect from this award winning series.”
Emma Loach, interim head of commissioning for documentaries at the BBC, said: “Firecrest have raised the bar yet again - exploring some of the most complex legal cases of our time whist delivering on the brands’ reputation for compelling and emotive storytelling.”
Vari Innes, executive producer at Firecrest Films, said: “We are proud to be returning to the BBC and the High Courts with these two exceptional cases. Filmed over several years, Death of a Dog Walker features unprecedented access - from day one of the murder investigation through to verdict at Glasgow High Court.
“Woman on the Bridge charts a landmark case highlighting vital conversations around domestic abuse and culpability. It has been an enormous privilege to be side by side with both Brian’s family and Kimberly’s family through these acutely difficult times and we are extremely grateful to them for allowing us to show their dedicated journey to seek justice for their loved ones.”
