Man jailed for attempted murder after assault on woman was caught on CCTV

A man caught on CCTV brutally assaulting and abusing a woman he met for a date has been jailed for nine years.

Michael Harvey, from Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, was found guilty of attempted murder after footage from Glasgow city centre cameras captured him viciously attacking the woman.

The 32-year-old was also filmed by CCTV in city hotels, shouting aggressively and gesticulating wildly at the victim over the course of a night out.

In the early hours of the morning of 1 October 2023, hotel footage showed him carrying the badly injured victim towards a room they had booked, where the assaults continued.

In the recording of a call made later to the ambulance service, Harvey can be heard pretending the victim had fallen in the shower.

The court heard the couple were on a date and he described the woman as his partner. His violence left her in an induced coma suffering from severe head injuries.

Last month, he was found guilty of attempted murder – with the additional aggravator of abuse of a partner or ex-partner.

He has now been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment. He was also given an indefinite non-harassment order.

Prosecutor Moira Orr, the national lead for homicide and major crime at the Crown Office said: “Over the course of an evening, Michael Harvey used appalling violence and threats to exert brutal control over a woman who had gone on a date with him.

“CCTV enabled our prosecutors to share significant evidence of his brutality and threatening behaviour which was exhibited in public view as well as in private.

“Our thoughts are with the woman who has suffered such terrible trauma and injuries but whose bravery has contributed so much to this prosecution.

“Violence against women and girls is a blight on our society. As this case shows, abuse can go on in plain sight as well as behind closed doors. We must all be vigilant.”
