Lord Weir installed as new judge

Social distancing was observed at the installation, held before a bench of two judges, the Lord President and the Lord Justice Clerk.

The Lord President, Lord Carloway, said: “It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the Court of Session bench in these difficult times. It is particularly important that the judges who are appointed have a breadth of both experience and skill. You undoubtedly fit into that category.

“Your 25 years’ experience across the spectrum of legal practice will stand you in good stead as you embark on another aspect of what has already been a distinguished legal career.

“We all wish you well in the future.”

A graduate of Durham and Dundee universities, Lord Weir became an advocate in 1995. He built up a busy civil practice over the next 15 years before being appointed as a Queen’s Counsel in 2010.

Prior to that he was an advocate depute for three years from 2005. In 2015, he became a sheriff, initially floating in South Strathclyde, before being appointed as a resident sheriff in Edinburgh in 2018, where he sat as one of the specialist sheriffs in the All Scotland Personal Injury Court.

Since 2017 he has also been a temporary judge of the High Court.
