Lord Lyon to appoint new pursuivants

The Lord Lyon is pleased to announce that he intends to appoint the following Pursuivants of Arms in January 2016:

  • Liam Devlin, Esq., as Unicorn Pursuivant of Arms in place of R John Malden, Esq., who will retire on 31 December 2015;
  • George Way of Plean, as Falkland Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary for a period of five years; and
  • John Stirling, Esq., WS, as Linlithgow Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary, also for a period of five years.
  • These appointments will take effect from 6 January 2016.

    The new pursuivants will be sworn in at a public sitting of the Lyon Court in February 2016.

    The Lord Lyon King of Arms is appointed by Her Majesty The Queen to oversee heraldry and state ceremonial in Scotland. The office is first recorded in 1399.

    In Scotland there are six Officers of Arms in ordinary (three heralds and three pursuivants), the number having been reduced from twelve by the Lyon King of Arms Act 1867.

    Officers of Arms are appointed by the Lord Lyon in Her Majesty’s Name.

    Further to ordinary appointments, the Lord Lyon is empowered to create Officers of Arms Extraordinary, generally for a fixed period and without salary.

    Former Lord Lyons have customarily been appointed as Heralds Extraordinary for life.
