Lord Campbell of Pittenweem CH CBE PC KC

Former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Menzies Campbell has died at the age of 84.
Known widely as Ming, he represented his constituency at Westminster for 28 years and led his party from 2006 to 2007.
Before entering politics, he enjoyed a distinguished athletics career. He held the UK 100m record from 1967 to 1974 and competed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, earning the nickname The Flying Scotsman.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey hailed him as “a dedicated public servant and a true Liberal giant.”
A Scottish MP, Lord Campbell was especially associated with foreign affairs, notably in his outspoken challenges to the legality of military action in Iraq. His path to Parliament was not straightforward, and he finally secured election in 1987 at the age of 46, entering the Commons alongside a younger generation of politicians.
Two decades later, he briefly led the party, before stepping down in 2007.
He entered Faculty in 1968 and took silk in 1982. The law gave him a lucrative career and he continued to practise throughout his time in politics.
