Lord Burrows to give lecture ‘Judicial House of Lords to Supreme Court’
Lord Burrows
On Tuesday 24th November, The Rt. Hon. Lord Burrows will be giving a lecture entitled, “Judicial House of Lords to Supreme Court: Then and Now”. Legal professionals and law students are invited to register to watch the lecture online.
Lord Burrows will be giving the second of two lectures celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Appellate Jurisdiction Act 1876. The act conferred the power to appoint Law Lords to conduct appeals. Lord Burrows will examine the background to that act, the development of the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords as a court, and the transformation into the Supreme Court in 2009.
What are the similarities and differences between the Supreme Court and the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords? What have been the benefits of the change in 2009 and have there been any disadvantages?
Find out on Tuesday 24 November 2026 from 6-7pm.
