Lord Advocate orders investigation into Stonehaven derailing

A joint investigation into the derailing of a train at Stonehaven yesterday has been ordered by the Lord Advocate.
Three people died on Wednesday when the Aberdeen to Glasgow service derailed near Stonehaven. The train is thought to have hit a landslide caused by heavy rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday night.
Six others were taken to hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious.
A spokesperson for the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said: “Following the incident at Stonehaven yesterday, the Lord Advocate has instructed a joint investigation by Police Scotland, British Transport Police and the Office of Rail and Road.
“The investigation will be carried out under the direction of the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service.
“This investigation is in parallel to the independent safety investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).”
