Lawyers court their fears to 'Glide the Clyde'

A group of brave lawyers from Edinburgh have taken on a daring stunt, leaping from a 150ft platform to zip-line across the River Clyde in support of specialist charity Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland (SBH Scotland).

The 15-strong team from legal firm MacRoberts LLP, which has offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee, reached speeds of 40 mph as they soared through the air, raising over £1,500 in the process. The team were part of a group of 250 fundraisers, which included a number of the charity’s members as well as corporate partners, who took on the brave challenge that was held over two days.

Funds raised from the “Glide the Clyde” event will be used to provide personalised home and hospital support to families in Scotland affected by the lifelong and complex conditions of spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.

The MacRoberts team signed up to the challenge after welcoming Dr Margo Whiteford, chairperson of SBH Scotland, who was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth, to their Glasgow office to talk about her experiences with spina bifida and the effect it’s had on her life.

Morag Graham, finance director at MacRoberts, said: “After learning about spina bifida and hydrocephalus and the amazing work SBH Scotland carry out, we knew that we wanted to take part in the Glide the Clyde challenge.

“We have lots of people in the firm who take on challenges for various charities, such as a big run or an outdoor swim, but we try to take part in one bigger challenge as a team once a year. Back in 2013, the team abseiled down our building, so we are used to facing our fears!”

Despite being scared of heights, Morag took part along with the rest of the team, and with her husband and daughter.

Morag added: “What Margo has achieved despite her condition is so inspiring. The work that she and SBH Scotland carry out is invaluable to not only those who live with the conditions, but also to their families.”
