Law students debate legalisation of assisted suicide in Scotland

Law students from the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow debated the question of whether assisted suicide should be legalised in Scotland in the University of Glasgow’s historic Debates Chambers.

Edinburgh University’s Mason Institute hosted the second annual intramural student debate between the universities’ law schools for “innovative learning week 2015”.

The debate was chaired by Leslie Stevens of the Mason Institute, with David Stephenson QC serving as judge.

Glasgow University was represented by: Frances Barnett, Leigh Stygal, Zita Dempsey, Francesca Allanson and Paul Anthony Cruikshank.

Edinburgh University was represented by: Rebecca Shilliday, Claire Brown,Ally Shaw, Sarah Kelly and Connor O’Neill.

The teams were asked to debate the question: “Should Scotland legalise assisted suicide?”.

Glasgow argued in favour of the proposition and Edinburgh against.

The judge determined that Glasgow won the debate (you can hear his reasoning from about 1:20:03 – 1:33:00 in the video).

Last year, the debate was held at Edinburgh on the question: “Should the law of the Scotland permit the sale of human organs and tissue?”.
