International judges to visit Mock Court Project

The School Mock Court Case Project is to host senior European judges.

While visiting Scotland, the judges will visit secondary schools to give talks to students about their roles and experiences, with a focus on current events.

They will also preside over the Seniors Mock Court Finals and speak at the inaugural Mock Court Conference.

The judges are:

  • Alphons Orie, a former judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the Supreme Court of the Netherlands, where he served from 1997 to 2001. He specialises in International Criminal Law cases.
  • Filipe Marques, a Portuguese judge and President of Magistrats Européens pour la Démocratie et les Libertés (MEDEL).
  • Dorota Zabludowska, vice-president and judge at the Gdańsk branch of the Association of Polish Judges “Iustitia”. She received the Equality Prize from then president of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz in 2018.
  • Jose Matos, a judge at the Court of Appeal of Porto, Portugal and president of the European Association of Judges. He has been in the Portuguese judiciary since 1989, and is a member of the advisory board of the Global Judicial Integrity Network.

The charity will also be holding its first Mock Court Conference, held in the High School of Glasgow on Tuesday 15th November from 5-8pm, where the judges will give talks, accompanied by Ania Ćwiklińska-Rutka, a senior teacher in Poland.

The talks will be on ‘The Independence of the Judiciary’, ‘The Role of the International Criminal Court (ICC)’ and ‘Refugees and the Polish Education System’.
