ICJ begins hearing Nicaraguan case against Germany over Gaza war

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has begun hearing a case brought by Nicaragua against Germany over its support for Israel in its war in Gaza.
In separate proceedings brought by South Africa against Israel, the ICJ previously found that there is a plausible risk of genocide being committed against Palestinians.
Nicaragua’s case alleges that, by providing political, financial and military support to Israel and by defunding UNRWA, Germany is “facilitating the commission of genocide and, in any case has failed in its obligation to do everything possible to prevent the commission of genocide”.
The ICJ is being asked to impose provisional measures on Germany, including an order to suspend military assistance and arms exports insofar as this aid “may be used in violation of the Genocide Convention”.
The case is being heard today and tomorrow.
