The 83rd annual general meeting of the Stair Society will be held in the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh on Saturday 17 November 2018, courtesy of the Faculty of Advocates.

The business part of the meeting will take place from 10.30 to 11.00 am, after which tea and coffee will be served.

At 11:30am, vice-president Professor Hector MacQueen will give the annual lecture entitled The Kings of Scots v The Earls of Douglas 1406-1455: a Game of Thrones?.

The lecture will start with the minority of King James II 1437-1449 and reflect on the background to (1) the trial of the eighth earl of Douglas for treason in June 1451; and (2) the king’s killing of the earl in February 1452.

Both events will be set against a background of the law on royal regency and the fraught relationship between the royal house and the earls of Douglas from 1406, leading up to the ultimate fall of the latter in 1455.

All are welcome to attend the lecture.
