Harper Macleod promotes two to partner

Harper Macleod has promoted two associates to partner.

Stephen Chan (pictured right) has been made a partner in the corporate team while Alexis Miller makes the step up within the firm’s highly regarded family law practice.

Martin Darroch, chief executive of Harper Macleod, said: “These promotions are a perfect illustration of what the firm is all about, both terms of our culture and the strategy which has seen us grow year-on-year for more than a decade.

“We have always been a place of opportunity for young lawyers and while good lateral hires have their place within the profession, it’s always extremely pleasing when you are able to promote from within – and also a sign that the business is providing the best platform for talented people to thrive.

“Over the past few years we have placed a great emphasis on creating a full service for all our clients, encompassing both their business and personal requirements. We now have one of the largest private clients departments in the country and our family law team is renowned for providing high quality advice, often in complex cases. Our corporate lawyers are also established as one of the leading dealmaking teams in Scotland.

“Both Stephen and Alexis have contributed significantly to our continued growth over the past few years and these promotions are thoroughly deserved.”

Mr Chan, 41, who joined the firm’s Edinburgh office as an associate in December 2014, becomes the 14th partner in the firm’s corporate department. He has a wide range of experience in corporate and corporate finance work, including mergers and acquisitions, management buy-outs, joint ventures and public offerings. He has also been heavily involved in the use of different types of partnerships as specialist joint venture or investment vehicles and advising professional services firms on partnership matters.

He said: “I’m delighted to become a partner in such a fantastic firm, which has provided both a great platform and complete support for the development of my career, especially on building up my partnership law practice. I’m looking forward to taking the next step and working with my colleagues in the corporate team as we continue to increase our presence in the east of Scotland.”

Ms Miller, 32 (pictured right), who joined the firm in 2012 as an assistant, has come through the ranks at the firm to take up a senior role in the highly regarded team. She has extensive experience in all matters relating to family law, with a specialist interest in dealing with high-value cases of financial provision on separation or divorce.

She has also been involved in training professionals from other legal disciplines in relation to dealing with business and other financial interests in divorce or separation.

She said: “I am delighted to be promoted to partner at Harper Macleod. Since I began working at the firm as an assistant in 2012 the firm has gone from strength to strength. I have been able to develop my professional career and personal skill set in that time because of the opportunities that the firm has afforded me and I’m grateful for the opportunity that I now have to be part of the continuing success of the firm.”
