Harper Macleod advises on family succession of security and safety business

Paul Macdonald

The future of one of Scotland’s largest security and safety businesses is in good hands as the founders step down and pass ownership over to their children.

Connelly Security Systems, better known as CSS, was formed in 1986 by Paul Connelly and his brothers, Jim and Pat. Since formation CSS has grown into one of Scotland’s largest businesses of its kind, providing fire, life safety and security systems to businesses and homes across the country. The business’ locations stretch across Scotland and has its own dedicated 24hr Alarm Receiving Centre that was established in 1993.

After a 46-year career, including almost 40 years at CSS, Paul Connelly has stepped back from day-to-day operations but has ensured the business remains in the family as it enters a new chapter. His three sons Callum, Declan and Lewis will now lead the business alongside managing director Joe McEnaney and the existing senior management team, preserving CSS’s longstanding relationships, values of innovation, integrity and community focus.

Reflecting on the milestone, the untimely death of fellow founder Jim Connelly (brother) in 1998 and the retirement of his brother, Pat Connelly, in 2012, Paul Connelly said: “When we started CSS 40 years ago, we hoped it would remain a family-owned business. Passing this legacy to my children is a proud moment. The business has grown into one of Scotland’s most trusted security providers, and we have every confidence that our boys will continue to build on that success. Our customers can rest assured that the same commitment to quality and service will remain at the heart of everything CSS does.”

The transition was made possible through a vendor-initiated management buyout (VIMBO), allowing Paul and Moira Connelly to move away from the day to day running of CSS while ensuring stability for the business, its employees, and customers. The corporate team at Harper Macleod, led by partner Paul Macdonald, advised on the transaction, guiding the business through the process to secure a seamless transition. CSS has been a longstanding client of the law firm, with support provided by Paul Macdonald on many corporate acquisitions over the last decade.

Mr Macdonald said: “It has been a privilege to help the Connelly family through this significant transition. This transaction is a prime example of how a well-structured business succession plan can safeguard a business’s legacy while empowering the next generation. The Connelly family’s dedication to CSS and to each other has been evident throughout the process, and I have no doubt the company will continue to thrive under the new leadership team. We wish them every success for the future.”
