Glasgow twins become solicitors side by side

Twins Stephanie and Madeleine Barratt, originally from Glasgow, were welcomed to the legal profession as Scottish solicitors on the same day.

Graham Matthews, president of the Law Society of Scotland, presented Madeleine, Stephanie and 62 other new solicitors with their certificates at the Law Society of Scotland’s most recent admissions ceremony.

The event took place in Edinburgh’s Signet Library and marked the culmination of years of hard work and the beginning of exciting careers in law.

Mr Matthews said: “Madeleine, Stephanie and all the other new solicitors should be very proud of themselves and each other.

“It takes years of hard work and determination to reach this important milestone and whatever direction their careers take them, they can wear the badge of Scottish solicitor along with over 11,000 of their peers who work in communities across Scotland, further afield in the UK and increasingly, overseas.

“I have been a Scottish solicitor for over thirty-five years and it is a career filled with great privileges, challenges and opportunities. Madeleine, Stephanie and their new solicitor colleagues have a world-class legal qualification which is highly respected by employers and lawyers all over the world. I wish them fulfilment and success in their chosen careers.”

Madeleine Barratt said: “We’re all so busy that it’s easy to let moments like this pass, so it’s lovely to actually mark the occasion.”

Stephanie Barratt said: “I am very proud to have been welcomed to the profession alongside Madeleine. It’s a very special occasion and we are looking forward to long and rewarding legal careers.”

Both Stephanie and Madeleine attended Hutchesons’ Grammar School in Glasgow and studied at Edinburgh University. Stephanie works as a litigation solicitor at Brodies in Edinburgh and Madeleine works in technology media and telecommunications at Pinsent Masons in Edinburgh.
