Germany: Alleged death camp guard, 95, faces trial as accessory to 36,000 murders

A 95-year-old man has been charged by German prosecutors with over 36,000 counts of accessory to murder because of his alleged role as a death camp guard.

Hans H., who lives in Berlin, is alleged to have been an SS guard at the Mauthausen death camp in Austria from summer 1944 until spring 1945.

At least 36,223 people held at the camp, the largest one in Austria, were killed during this period.

Prosecutors said that the accused man “is believed to have been aware of all the methods of killing as well as the disastrous living conditions of the inmates”.

They added: “It is believed that he knew these methods of killing were used against a large number of people and that they could only be killed in this way, with this degree of regularity, if the victims were guarded by people like him.”

A court in Berlin will now decide whether or not the case against Hans H. can proceed to trial.
