FLSU tables its support for Pro Bono Week 2025

The Faculty of Advocates’ Free Legal Services Unit (FLSU) will again host events during Pro Bono Week dedicated to advancing access to justice and strengthening pro bono legal services across Scotland.

Pro Bono Week takes place across the UK from 3 to 7 November this year, with an overall theme of “Pro Bono in Action”.

The FLSU is part of the newly formed Scottish Pro Bono Roundtable, made up of representatives from various legal organisations, charities, and law firms not only in Scotland but nationally. In this capacity, it will host an in-person, innovative and interactive event at the Mackenzie Building in Edinburgh on Thursday, 6 November.

At the event, entitled The Scottish Pro Bono Roundtable: Advancing Justice Together, attendees will explore key themes shaping the future of pro bono work by participating in three roundtables. Each roundtable will represent one of this year’s national pro bono sub-themes, which are:

  • Pro bono: Stories of impact – hear from the frontline about how pro bono lawyers transform lives and support charities to make a difference in our communities and abroad.
  • Pro bono: Win-win for professional and business development – develop skills, experience, and a professional network, and an asset in recruitment and retention.
  • Pro bono: Getting involved – advice and practical steps about how to start making a difference through pro bono.

Each table will be facilitated by a table lead, and graphic scribes will visually capture the discussions in real time – creating a compelling visual summary to be shared across Scotland to raise awareness of and engagement in pro bono legal services.

The event will be chaired by Neil Mackenzie KC, FLSU convenor and keeper of the Advocates Library. A networking reception will follow the discussions, offering delegates the opportunity to connect and reflect on the challenges facing legal services in Scotland with others across the legal and access to justice sectors who share their commitment to pro bono work. Attendance is free and open to anyone with an interest in pro bono. Registration will close on Thursday, 30 October 2025. Anyone who would like to secure a seat can register here.

The FLSU will also again take part in the Great Legal Bake during Pro Bono Week to raise vital funds to ensure access to justice for those unable to afford legal representation.

“Receiving good legal advice at the right time can make a huge difference to people’s lives – reducing their chances of facing debt, poverty, homelessness, exploitation, and discrimination. All proceeds will go towards funding the vital work done by charities promoting pro bono services,” said Mr Mackenzie.
