Event: How to Manage the Tax Landscape for Landed Estates and Property Businesses in Light of Recent Tax Changes

The Edinburgh branch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), supported by Edinburgh Tax Network and Terra Firma Chambers, will present a seminar entitled How to Manage the Tax Landscape for Landed Estates and Property Businesses in Light of Recent Tax Changes at the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh on Thursday 28 August 2025.

At this event, speaker John Endacott, FCA, CTA (fellow), partner & head of tax, PKF Francis Clark and author of the leading textbook Endacott on Furnished Holiday Lettings, will consider the following:

  • Macdonald [2025] UKFTT 00495 (TC) involving a shoot, income tax losses and whether a small estate is a single undertaking;
  • Implications for Brander/Balfour assessments in view of the Macdonald decision;
  • APR/BPR – thoughts on the consultation on trusts, pros and cons of gifting, will drafting pitfalls, practical planning ideas for future executors
  • Holiday lets – where are we now? Could income from property amount to a trade?

Registration and networking will commence at 12.30pm with the seminar starting at 1pm. The seminar has been accredited by the Faculty of Advocates as contributing 1 hour of CPD for its own members and is eligible for a similar award from the Law Society for the solicitor branch of the profession.
