England: Barrister denied silk after judges intervene

A barrister whose application to become Queen’s Counsel was opposed by two judges faced apparent bias in the appointments process, an investigation has concluded.

Marc Beaumont unsuccessfully applied to the Queen’s Counsel appointments panel in 2016 and again in 2018.

The panel had received letters in 2016 from Lord Burnett of Maldon and Sir Brian Leveson opposing his appointment, but Mr Beaumont was only told about the former.

A complaints committee has concluded after a six-month investigation that the panel had shown apparent bias, The Times reports.

Labour peer Lord Hendy QC represented Mr Beaumont in the appeal and said the process “smacks of the sort of blackballing system of the past”.
