England: Bar regulators consider 'multi-track qualification scheme'

A multi-track qualification scheme could be introduced at the English bar as early as next September, The Brief reports.

The scheme is reportedly being considered as a key measure in widening social access and reducing the cost of becoming a barrister.

Proposals under consideration by the Bar Standards Board would allow students to take a two-part course instead of the typical Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC).

The first part of the course would involve remote study and then an exam, after which successful students would move on to a second part based on a traditional lecture format and final exam.

If backed by regulators, the new style of course could be introduced as early as next September to help disadvantaged students pass the bar.
