A lecture at the University of Edinburgh will examine how adoption law defines family relationships and how approaches to adoption vary across legal and cultural settings.

The W.A. Wilson Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Professor Anne Röthel, director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg. She will discuss the competing ideas that adoption can reflect personal choice while also giving the law power to determine who counts as family.

Professor Röthel’s research focuses on family law, comparative law and the law of persons. She is also an honorary professor at the University of Edinburgh.

The annual lecture is named after Bill Wilson, who taught law at the university from 1960 until his death in 1994. A reception will follow the lecture.
