Dundee mooters enjoy 'fantastic opportunity' as they look to the future

Four final year law students from the University of Dundee, Evana Ferguson, David Durie, Daniel Breerton and Asa Jordan, competed in the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition at the International Court in Justice in May this year.

Ms Ferguson and Mr Durie represented the respondent state in the fictitious case and placed 8th out of 22 teams.

The respondents were praised for their ”excellent knowledge of international law and their compelling submissions.” Mr Breerton and Mr Jordan acted for the applicant state. Both were complimented for their responses to judicial questioning. Overall, Scotland placed 13th in the competition.

The team thanked their sponsors and everyone for their support, particularly their coaches: Jacques Hartmann, Charlotte White, Samuel White and Conor Keir who have supported them throughout the competition.

The team, all of whom graduated with LLBs this month, have bright futures ahead.

Ms Ferguson will take up a position as a legal researcher at the University of Dundee and will deliver presentations to sixth form students on how to moot. Additionally, she will begin a legal summer internship in July and will commence the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice in September.

Mr Breerton will be undertaking a week-long summer internship at a Glasgow-based specialist litigation firm. In September, he will be returning to the university to complete the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice.

Mr Durie, who won a trophy for Runner-Up Best Oralist, will also be undertaking the Diploma and looks forward to pursuing a career in litigation.

Mr Jordan is undertaking a Master of Laws in International Criminal Law and Human Rights at the university, commencing this September.

Ms Ferguson told Scottish Legal News: “This was a fantastic opportunity and we are very proud to have represented our country in such a prestigious competition. The skills we have gained will prepare us well for a career in law as solicitors.”
