Domestic abuser who murdered partner jailed for life

A domestic abuser who murdered his partner in the Scottish Borders has been jailed for life.

Corey Dryden killed mum-of-two Megan Hughes after violently assaulting her with weapons at their home in Chirnside, near Duns, on 9 February 2025.Instead of calling the emergency services to help Megan, the 32-year-old waited more than two hours before eventually dialling 999.

Dryden earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of murder, an offence which was aggravated due to it involving the abuse of a partner. The court heard how Dryden had previously been abusive towards the 31-year-old victim by shouting and calling her names in the lead up to the domestic homicide.

Dryden was ordered to serve a minimum of 18 years in custody when he appeared for sentencing at the High Court in Edinburgh on 24 July 2025.

Moira Orr, who leads on homicide and major crime for the Crown Office, said:“Corey Dryden is a violent and dangerous man who murdered Megan Hughes in her home, where she had the right to be safe.

“After subjecting her to a horrific assault, he left his partner on the floor to die instead of calling for help. His cruel and callous actions have robbed Megan of her future and left her family and loved ones to deal with this unimaginable loss. Our thoughts remain with them.”
