Crown Office to investigate death of student following grading error

The Crown Office is to re-examine the death of a student who took his own life after a grading error at the University of Glasgow.

Ethan Brown, 24, died in December 2024 on the day he was due to graduate.

Three months earlier, he had been told that he had not received a grade for part of his course and would therefore not be eligible to graduate. It was later discovered that this was a mistake and that he should have been awarded his honours degree alongside his classmates.

The Crown Office has now confirmed that the case will be re-examined “in light of new information”.

A spokesperson for the Crown Office said: “The circumstances of Ethan Brown’s death are being re-examined in light of new information. The family have been informed and will be kept updated.”
