Craig Murray given permission to appeal contempt finding

Craig Murray has been given permission to appeal his conviction for breaching a court order by publishing information on his blog which enabled jigsaw identification of the women in the Alex Salmond case.

The former diplomat spent four months in prison after being given an eight-month sentence.

His lawyers argue, however, that his conviction fell foul of Articles 10 and 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights – the right to freedom of expression and a fair trial.

The Lord President, Lord Carloway said at a virtual hearing yesterday that the it was “competent” for the appeal against contempt finding to be heard.

Mr Murray’s case will be heard on February 23.
