Cost of Scottish public inquiries exceeds £250m

The cost of public inquiries in Scotland has exceeded £250 million, with the bill rising by almost £30m in just nine months.

Figures show that between 2007 and September 2025, the total bill for the cost of inquiries was £258.8m.

That number has increased by £28.8m from December 2024, data from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICE) showed.

The research revealed: “The total cost of these inquiries, when completed inquiry costs are put into 2024- 25 prices, is £258.8m (thus far). This is £9.3m more than when the last update was published in September.”

The costliest inquiry is the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry, which is investigating the abuse of young people in care in Scotland.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes is due to face questioning from Holyrood’s Finance and Public Administration Committee on the issue.
