Child abuse inquiry costs taxpayer £65m

Scotland’s child abuse inquiry has cost the taxpayer almost £65 million, new figures show.

The probe cost more than £3.7m between October 1 and December 31 last year, bringing the total to around £64.65m.

It was established by the Scottish government in October 2015 following a campaign by people who had been abused in residential and foster care.

The inquiry heard last month that no part of Scotland was “immune” to the abuse of children across more than eight decades.

More than 250 witnesses gave evidence of foster care abuse and the inquiry team recovered more than 40,000 relevant documents and considered evidence from experts, local authorities, foster carers and others.

In September 2021, the Scottish government apologised “unreservedly” for its “woeful and wholly avoidable” 13-year delay in setting up the inquiry.
