Careers clinic for aspiring female advocates returns

The Faculty of Advocates will again host its annual “Women at the Scottish Bar” Careers Clinic, reaffirming its commitment to promoting and encouraging greater diversity within its membership.

The Careers Clinic will take place on the evening of Wednesday 3 June, marking the fourth year the initiative has been run. The event is designed to encourage more women to consider a career at the Scottish Bar and to reflect the diverse population that Faculty serves in its pursuit of justice across Scotland.

The clinic offers trainees and qualified solicitors the opportunity to speak confidentially with women currently practising at the Scottish Bar. Discussions will focus on planning a route to the bar, understanding current opportunities and work levels at Faculty, and gaining an honest insight into what life as an advocate is really like.

Appointments will be held virtually by video conference and scheduled outwith normal working hours. All attendance and discussions at this free event will be treated in strict confidence.

Treasurer at the Faculty of Advocates, Ruth Crawford KC, welcomed the return of the initiative. “I would encourage all women interested in a career as an Advocate to attend,” she said.

“Our justice system is at its strongest when everyone with the talent and ambition to serve can do so, and this clinic plays a significant role in strengthening the bar’s existing talent. It allows us to share the opportunities available to women at Faculty, in a confidential setting, and correct any misconceptions. It also informs what more we could do to promote and encourage diversity at Faculty.”

The Careers Clinic is open to trainee solicitors and qualified solicitors currently in practice in Scotland or in another jurisdiction.

Those wishing to attend are invited to complete the application form and return it to deans.secretariat@advocates.org.uk by Wednesday 27 May 2026.
