A businessman has been fined £1,000 at Selkirk Sheriff Court for assaulting a Galashiels solicitor in his office.

Malcolm Crawford, 53, was found guilty of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and seizing a solicitor by the body at the offices of Iain Smith and Partners on 11 February, the Border Telegraph reports.

The court heard that Mr Crawford became aggressive after the lawyer entered the mail room to tell a colleague who was meeting with Mr Crawford that the main meeting room was available.

After the lawyer asked for an apology, Mr Crawford grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against the wall.

The lawyer’s colleague and Mr Crawford’s wife then calmed him down.

Sheriff Raymond McMenamin ordered Mr Crawford to pay a £500 fine on each charge.
