Anderson Strathern has appointed corporate partner Bruce Farquhar as chair to lead it during its next phase of growth working alongside managing partner, Murray McCall.

Mr Farquhar started his legal career as a court lawyer in Glasgow before joining Anderson Strathern in 2001 and moving into corporate law. He went on to set up the firm’s renewable energy practice and he has played a significant role in building the firm’s client base in Scotland, the UK and internationally across Europe and Asia.

As part of his track record in lateral hires and acquisitions for the firm’s growth, Mr Farquhar was key mover in bringing boutique construction litigation practice ADLP into the firm and also recently brought in John Brett, former Aberdeen Asset Management global head to the CEO role in the firm’s asset management arm, ASAM.

Mr Farquhar takes over from the current chair, Robert Carr, who stands down on 31 March after 12 years in the role. Mr Carr remains a partner at the firm and will lead the firm’s newly established Advocacy and Legal Opinions Unit.

Mr McCall said: “Bruce Farquhar brings great legal acumen and a strong background in business development, growth through new clients, lateral hires and acquisitions and has built a practice area from scratch. He brings a fantastic range of qualities to the post of chair as we look ahead to a bright future and further growth for Anderson Strathern.

“At the same time, we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Robert Carr for twelve years as chair, his inspiring leadership and, in business terms, his significant contribution in taking the firm to a position where we are now pre-eminent across the commercial, public and private client sectors.”

Mr Farquhar added: “Having been part of Anderson Strathern for the last 16 years it is an understatement to say I am genuinely honoured to take over as chair. The firm is a dynamic player on the Scottish, UK and international scene having had a proud history of serving clients since the 18th century.”
