Bids sought for £20m Edinburgh law school revamp

The University of Edinburgh is seeking a contractor for the £20 million refurbishment of its Old College.

It plans to phase the work over five years, beginning this summer or autumn.

The historic building dates back to 1582, when King James VI gifted the site to the Burgh for the creation of a new university.

The University of Edinburgh was founded the following year, with Old College being built in 1789.

William Playfair, Robert Adam and Rowand Anderson all contributed to its design.

The refurbishment will retain and restore many of the original features of Old College and create new spaces for teaching, learning and research.

A key element of the 190,000 sq ft building revamp will be to create a new law library, spanning the length of the quadrangle’s west side.

The University project team is led by LDN Architects with Adams Consulting Group handling CDM responsibilities.

Harley Haddow is providing consultant mechanical and electrical services.

Sweett is the university cost consultant and Elliot and Company structural engineers.
