Ayr Sheriff Court repairs pass £250,000 as renovation works continue

Renovation and safety works at Ayr Sheriff Court have already cost more than £250,000, with further work still to be completed.

A freedom of information request by the Ayr Advertiser shows that £262,898 has been spent across two phases of repairs at the scaffolded court building, and that the project is not expected to finish for several more months.

Scaffolding was first erected in June last year after pieces of masonry fell from the building, prompting immediate safety measures.

The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service (SCTS) subsequently carried out an intrusive fabric survey of the stonework at Ayr Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court. That assessment identified problems with the condition and integrity of the stone, largely attributable to the age of the building.

As a precaution, the front façade was secured using scaffolding and protective netting to prevent further debris from falling.

The FOI response shows that the first phase of the project – covering the stone survey, specialist consultancy fees and scaffolding – cost £198,753 between July 2024 and July 2025.

A second phase, involving stone repairs and additional scaffolding, has so far cost £64,145 since July this year and remains ongoing.
