Anderson Strathern continues winning streak on sports and leisure deals
Anderson Strathern’s commercial property team has played a key role in Northwind Leisure Golf’s appointment as operating partner for the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews’ (R&A) community-based golf and entertainment facility in Glasgow.
The firm has revealed it acted on behalf of Northwind as part of the agreement to take on daily operations at Golf It! – continuing a run of sports and leisure sector deals in Scotland.
Commercial property partner Paul Lombardi represented the Glasgow-based company, which operates a portfolio of sport and leisure facilities across the UK, including Great Western Golf in Clydebank and nationwide Goals football centres and Soccerworld facilities.
The deal sees Northwind take on day-to-day operations of Golf It! following three years of direct in-house management – while the R&A retains full ownership of the facility.
Mr Lombardi said: “We are proud to have represented a Glasgow-based business in taking on operations of a local – yet widely acclaimed – golfing venue. The operating agreement gives Northwind a unique opportunity to further the facility’s commercial success, increase footfall and improve multi-sport community integration.
“As part of the agreement, we also negotiated an overriding lease of the entire Golf It! premises, which sees Northwind inherit a range of sub-tenants including American Golf, Game 4 Padel, Lullaby Lane Nurseries and the Big Feed.”
Mr Lombardi continued: “Our wider deals team has been saying for some time now that, despite ongoing economic uncertainty, high quality sports and leisure assets remain attractive – and this is the case for operators as well as owners and investors.
“The broader market trend for sport and leisure points towards achieving sustainable growth through enhanced governance – and that’s exactly what a well-executed operating agreement offers. This agreement between Northwind and the R&A is a prime example of the opportunities available for operators that exist within Scotland’s sport and leisure sector.”
