And finally… There’s gold in them thar bowels

A suspected thief has been forced to eat more than 60 bananas and had four enemas injected directly into his lower bowel after he swallowed a gold chain worth £660 in Mumbai, India.

The 25-gram necklace had a large pendant which delayed its passage and ultimate retrieval.

Police believe Jadahav snatched the gold from 52-year-old housewife Rajeshri Mayekar last Monday afternoon and the necklace and pendant were duly returned to her on Thursday.

Unsurpisingly, Mrs Mayekar told local media that she would never again wear the object and would have it melted down and made into a new piece of jewellery.

The man, named Anil Jadhav by police, allegedly snatched the chain from a housewife before quickly swallowing it in a bid to maintain his innocence.

Police took Jadahav to Mumbai’s Sion hospital where X-rays of the suspect’s stomach located the missing jewellery.

Once the stolen pendant and necklace were identified, Jadahav was ordered to drink a special liquid and eat more than 60 bananas to aid the digestive process.

Concerned by the lack of movement, doctors then prepared four enemas and injected them in a bid to remove the blockage.

Senior police inspector Sanjay Surve told Mid-Day.com: ‘We provided four dozen bananas to the hospital so they could feed them to Yadav. His family also arrived later, and they were also feeding bananas to him.’
