And finally… that itchy feeling

A sheriff took the unusual step yesterday of moving his courtroom to a van in the car park of the court.

Sheriff Michael Wood at Perth Sheriff Court, which makes its second appearance in our “And finally” section (click here for the first), convened the court in the back of a G4S van to conduct a hearing involving a prisoner who suffered from a transmittable skin condition.

Jamie Wisbey, 49, was held in a plastic cell in the van as he was believed to have scabies or something like scabies.

He appeared on a petition that alleged he was discovered with a crossbow in Perth on Monday as well as a bow and arrow.

A third charge stated he had a locking saw blade at Perth Railway station as well as in a public park.

The hearing lasted barely 60 seconds.

Mr Wisbey’s solicitor, the court clerk, depute fiscal Joanne Smith and Sheriff Wood stood outside the van deciding how to best recreate the courtroom layout in the back of the vehicle.

Upon leaving the van, one of them was heard saying: “Well, that was something different.”

A court source said: “I’ve heard of the court being moved down to the cells but this is the first time I can remember anyone actually venturing out of the building.

“There were concerns about what skin condition Mr Wisbey might have so it was considered a necessary precaution to keep him away from the public areas.”
