Julie Kaputa, a senior at Beaver River Central School in Castorland in upstate New York, said she had been told to discard the drink or go to the school office.

She said she was protesting a new code banning outside food and drinks, which she believed had been introduced without the required public hearing.

Kaputa said she had warned her teacher and school officials beforehand and was prepared to accept the consequences. She was placed in in-school suspension before being allowed to return to class with her drink.

Her mother said Kaputa had chosen coffee as a protest because, as student body president, she had classmates’ support.

The school district subsequently scheduled a public hearing on the code.
