The hoax, which reportedly originated in neighbouring Kwale County, has led to a series of attacks in recent days, with several people injured after being falsely accused of causing others’ genitals to disappear through touch.

The Mombasa County Security and Intelligence Committee said the rumours were being spread by organised criminals seeking to create panic, distract the public and enable thefts from traders and businesses.

County Commissioner Mohamed Noor said investigations had found no evidence to support the claims.

“We went to all hospitals and health centres; no one has lost anything. It is gossip that is being misused, especially on TikTok,” he said.
