Monopoliya plays during a scene set in New York’s Brighton Beach, home to a large Russian-speaking community. Monetochka, whose real name is Yelizaveta Gyrdymova, has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and helped raise hundreds of thousands of euros for Ukrainian refugees.

But Ukrainian cinemas cut the scene after complaints from audiences. One cinemagoer wrote on social media: “I don’t give a damn about ‘good Russians’ and their stance – my home is occupied, and I hate everything associated with the Russian Federation.”

In Russia, the song was removed from a pirated version of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and replaced with Rihanna’s S&M. No official explanation was given, but the decision is thought to reflect Monetochka’s opposition to the war.

Monetochka left Russia in 2022 and lives in Lithuania. She has been designated a “foreign agent” by the Kremlin and was sentenced in absentia last month to a year in prison.
