Elon Musk’s SpaceX is to pay an undisclosed sum to the makers of party game Cards Against Humanity after trespassing on land which was purchased to frustrate the construction of Donald Trump’s border wall with Mexico.

The company behind Cards Against Humanity – which bills itself as “a party game for horrible people” – purchased the land near the US-Mexico border in 2017 following a crowdfunding campaign which saw 150,000 people donate $15 each.

The stated goal of the crowdfunding campaign was to prevent the plot from being used for the construction of a new border wall by Trump, who had just come into office.

However, the business said in 2024 that “an even richer, more racist billionaire – Elon Musk – snuck up on us from behind and completely fucked that land with gravel, tractors, and space garbage”.

Cards Against Humanity launched a lawsuit seeking $15 million in damages, alleging that the land had been unlawfully used as a SpaceX construction site for six months.

The case concluded last month after a settlement was reached between the two companies, The New York Times reports.

Although the terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, Cards Against Humanity indicated it was closer to $2 for each of the 150,000 original donors rather than the $100 sought.

In a statement, the company said: “We’re happy to have stood up to a bully like Musk. We’re happy to have forced a settlement.”
