And finally… no escape for drunk Swiss cable car drivers

Drunk cable car drivers in Switzerland will no longer be able to escape prosecution after a legal loophole they could exploit was closed.

Swiss authorities did not impose an alcohol limit on cable car operators before Wednesday, but from the beginning of next month the law will be changed – imposing the same limit drivers on the roads are subject to.

The country’s highest governing body said in a statement: “Employees who are entrusted with safety-relevant tasks will no longer be able to perform these duties after 0.5 parts per thousand.”

A federal traffic office spokesman explained the rule was being brought in to tidy up the messy legal situation.

He said: “Until now, it was already forbidden to perform security-relevant cable car activities while drunk, but under the prior formulation it was not possible to criminally prosecute someone caught under the influence of alcohol, except in the case of an accident.”
