The famously calm rodents entered the Mato Grosso state legislature building in Cuiabá last week, surprising lawmakers who were preparing for a vote.

The building is located beside a park populated by wildlife, and staff member Nayara Bueno filmed the capybaras’ unexpected visit on July 30 as she attempted to guide them back outside.

“They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Bueno said.

Capybaras, which are native to South America, have become popular online because of their relaxed behaviour and social nature. The semi-aquatic animals typically live near rivers, lakes and wetlands in groups and can weigh up to 80 kilograms (175 pounds).

The visit caused no damage to the Mato Grosso state legislature.
