A police team was left stumped after pulling over a car for an illegal manoeuvre only to find out that it had no driver.

Police in San Bruno, California said they were at a loss for what to do after spotting a self-driving car making an illegal U-turn.

“Since there was no human driver, a ticket couldn’t be issued (our citation books don’t have a box for ‘robot’),” the force wrote on Facebook.

Waymo, the Google-owned self-driving taxi company responsible for the vehicle, was notified by police about the incident.

“Hopefully the reprogramming will keep it from making any more illegal moves,” San Bruno Police Department said.

It added: “For those who believe that we are being lenient, there is legislation in the works that will allow officers to issue the company notice.

“Whether it’s drivers, passengers, or even driverless cars, we’ll continue to do our part to keep San Bruno’s streets safe.”
